A number of studies in the past few years have shown a systemic relationship between the bacteria associated with periodontal inflammation and its direct effect on other organs of the body. We can no longer just address the tarter that forms on the teeth but also the biofilm of pathogens that form on the root surfaces. These pathogens infiltrate the bloodstream and travel to the other organs throughout the body creating a number of health problems. These systemic effects have been demonstrated and widely accepted by the medical community. The most critical organs affected are the heart, lungs, and liver. Laser therapy can now address these concerns as an effective treatment for periodontal disease.
For many years surgery has been the only course of treatment for periodontal disease. However, today a new approach is being used. Soft tissue diode lasers are able to remove the diseased and inflamed lining of the periodontal pockets. This technique involves the placement of a tiny fiber through which light energy is transmitted – laser dentistry. Studies have shown that this laser treatment will destroy the bacteria that cause the destructive process. Once these areas are treated, the periodontal pocket will return to a healthy state. This procedure offers a much more pleasant and relatively painless alternative to some of the more serious periodontal conditions.
